So one of the things I don’t practice enough is the whole adornment side of tribal fusion. We have some KILLER costuming (take a look at Mardi Love’s stuff!) and we should play with it more.
For our next class, on October 30th, let’s adorn ourselves! Feel free to bring belts, coins, tassels, scarves, jewellery, and whatever else makes you happy. Skirts, harem pants, leggings… whatever! I’ll bring some things to help deck everyone out (do try practicing beforehand to be sure you can dance safely) and otherwise remember to have fun- this is the adult dress up night.
Don’t stress- just enjoy!
See you on Sunday!
So- tribal-style snake arms.
For practice in class today we were dancing to:
That’s Saltillo’s “Hollow”.
It’s a killer song generally– but it’s extra good for timing nice, slow, ooey-gooey movements.
Happy first class, everyone!
As requested, here is the music we were dancing to tonight– for both classes!
Umata Grapevine + Mardi Love Campfire step phrase:
First song: Two Fingers by Fools Rhythm: https://youtu.be/ciX2kse12ag
Second (faster) song: More Than Anything (Love and Light remix) by Desert Dwellers, Down Temple Dub Remix Album:

See you next week!
Happy Fall! There’s an awesome FREE workshop on tonight — Danielle hasn’t been teaching for the summer and is ready to jump-start your Fall of Dance! Tonight, Sunday September 25th is a “get back into it” (or just a “get into it”) intro class to hit some of the fundamentals. It goes from 6:30-8:00 pm at Perpetual Motion Dance Studio!
Fall Classes start next Sunday, October 2nd– check out the Classes page for more information, and send an email to email@example.com to let Danielle know you’re planning on coming!
How have you been?
You’ve probably noticed (and hopefully have already heard) — Danielle is taking a short hiatus from teaching for personal reasons. We’re planning to be back up and dancing in May 2016, so check back for news, or reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org to be added to the email list!
(for something fun — check out this duet https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOgRUVwxSv4
and then compare it and check out how many similar moves there are with this very different piece
So it’s finally Spring this weekend — officially turns just a couple hours before class, in fact. How’s that for promising?
We’re moving to a new framework– schedule is the same, but the early class (6:30-7:30) is now available to drop-in, 5-class passes, and 10-class passes. Check out the Classes and Prices pages for the new information!
The later class (7:30-8:30) is available to anyone who’s danced at least one session with me, and it’s a lot of fun! This Spring we’re doing combos, choreography, and talking costumes and staging. Cool stuff! It’s by registration only, so let me know by March 31st if you plan on attending.
Can’t wait to get going!
I’ve had a couple requests for music —
like the playlists I use in class.
For some unknown reason, I can’t seem to put together an easy “buy these” list in iTunes to share out… so you’re going to have to make do with the following boring old list, and look them up in your favourite e-music provider’s store.
- Start with any fun pop song you like to warm up (I rotate these)
- Kraddy – Dub 17
- Radio Laria – Three Quarters
- Jade CANADA – Process S
- Desert Dwellers (Love and Light Remix) – More Than Anything
- Lilly Wood & Robin Schultz – Prayer in C
- Infinity Ink – Infinity
- The White Stripes (The Glitch Mob Remix) – Seven Nation Army
- Bassnectar – Heads Up
- Fat Mechanic (White Label Remix) – A Silence of 3 Parts
If you have these or buy these songs, you’ll definitely recognise some of them– a few are included in almost every class playlist I use (Dub 17, Three Quarters, Heads Up, and either Infinity or Prayer in C are my favourites for classes), but I’m always searching for new music. Feel free to listen to other stuff by the same artists, or remix artists, and at the end of the day, dance to what feels good.
See you this weekend!
Oh, hello Ladies!
Sad that we don’t have class this week?
…let me make it up to you.
Here’s a quick sampler of some of my favourite bellydance videos!
(and don’t forget- class is still ON for Valentine’s Day !)
An all-time classic, and a serious long-term favourite of mine… this is Rachel Brice in Slovenia from 2009! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxzIvhFoiqc
It’s fairly common to hook a couple songs together for one performance… this is a very cool, ‘something for everyone’ set by Zoe Jakes in 2013! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgnRc7DSK7k
Donna Mejia is one of the coolest dance professors on the planet… this is a “world fusion” piece, emphasis on African, Indian, and modern bellydance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77vuSKs8huU
Major history moment– these women have some serious dance background! Most of my teachers trace their dance back to one of these women… their movements and vocabulary can be seen in a lot of what we do in tribal fusion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iOpBUFchbg
(Stay tuned for more fun!)
